Can I trust you? Discovering how trustworthiness is communicated through vocal cues.

Hello, thank you for your interest in my PhD research study 😀

PROJECT INFORMATION This study aims to determine voice factors that influence the perceived trustworthiness of a speaker.
We want to know how different speakers process voice cues in terms of trustworthiness.

Your responses from this study will help researchers understand how people trust and form first impressions of strangers.

The study
  • First, you will listen to a series of short sentences spoken by different speakers, which you will have to rate based on your first impressions of them.
  • Then, you will have to complete a short questionnaire. You will not be asked for any personally identifiable information.
  • The study is estimated to take up to 15 minutes.
  • There is no right or wrong answer. Simply answer based on your gut feeling (do not overthink it).

Potential risks
There are no identified risks. The study involves completing a web-based survey presenting audio recordings that would not be suitable for individuals hard of hearing.

Informed consent
By completing and submitting the survey for this study, you are consenting to the ‘statements of consent’ mentioned further below.

Withdrawal
Your participation is voluntary and you will be free to withdraw from the project at any time without giving any reason and without penalty. If you wish to withdraw, do not submit your survey responses and close your browser window. It will not be possible to delete your data after you have completed the experiment, because the data are stored anonymously, so it will not be possible to identify your data.

Data gathered

  • We will collect the following data from each participant: (a) non-identifiable demographics data, (b) trust ratings relating to the audio files, (c) additional information explaining participants’ reasoning behind their given rating score.
  • Your experimental data will be fully anonymous, so that it is not possible to identify you from our stored data.
  • We are using your data to (a) evaluate the suitability of participants’ based on their given demographics information, (b) ratings of the perceived trustworthiness of the utterances heard in the audio recordings along with any additional information, will help the research team understand the reasons behind the given rating scores and the impact of each utterance on the listener.
  • Your data will be gathered by the doctoral researcher, Constantina Maltezou.
  • Your anonymous data may be published in scientific journal articles, and shared in permanent, publicly accessible archives accessible from any country.
